It's very important for everyone to have a clear understanding of everything that can be done to protect them against STDs. There are many different STDs out there. Some of them can be fatal; some of them can affect your ability to have children in the future; some of them can lead to other health conditions; and some of them can stay with you for the rest of your life. They can also be extremely easy for you to pass on to someone you are with in the future. Here are some of the many things that you can do that will help you to protect yourself from getting an STD:

Don’t Have Sexual Intercourse

The number one most effective way for you to make sure you don't get an STD is to abstain from having sexual intercourse, period. However, for most people this isn't feasible. Even if you decide to wait until marriage, you are most likely going to want to have intercourse with your spouse. There are never 100% guarantees that your spouse won't ever give you an STD, so you have to be very careful with who you choose to be with and consider getting tested routinely.

Don’t Have Sex Without a Condom

Using a condom or having your partner use a condom is a very good form of protection when it comes to protecting you from getting an STD. However, condoms must be used correctly. There are a lot of things that can be done wrong to make them ineffective that many people still don't understand. Genitals should never come into contact at all without the condom in place. Also, the penis should be removed while the condom is held on it with a hand and right after intercourse, before the condom begins to get loose. Don't use old condoms or condoms that have a damaged package.

Do Not Share Towels, Bathing Suits or Underwear

Sharing towels, bathing suits and even underwear is another way that STDs can be spread that a lot of people just don't realize. The transference of an STD can happen when fabrics that have touched one person's genitals then touches someone else's genitals.

 Don't Get Drunk

One of the times that many people tend to make careless decisions sexually that can increase their chances of getting an STD is when they have had too much to drink. For this reason, you should always make sure you drink alcohol responsibly and not to get drunk. Also, you may want to only drink at home and while you are around people you can count on to help keep you responsible.

If you suspect that you may have an STD, don't hesitate to seek STD treatment.
